Markets and distribution adapted during Covid. The shape of the CSA continues to evolve.  Small farmers are continuously finding ways to distribute their food to communities so it is affordable, accessible & profitable - a difficult task.  Others have managed to secure funding from grants and crowdfunding.

Have your markets evolved over the years since you started? What is the greatest missing link for your markets to be successful? How do you remain responsive to your customers and community's needs and interests?What significant decisions and compromises have you made to adapt to changing markets?

Seafood farming and aquaculture are the fastest growing food production systems in the world, as almost half of the seafood we eat comes from farms.  New England and the Mid-Atlantic has a vibrant commercial aquaculture industry that commonly farms oysters, mussels, Atlantic salmon, and kelp. Yet, in many states, farmers face  challenging legislation limiting their ability to farm in the ocean and methodology is controversial because of environmental impacts and health concerns.

Can aquaculture development to help meet future food needs and ease burdens on natural resources? Are fish farms harmful to the environment and native fish habitat or an improvement on over harvesting wild places?

Mushrooms are highly nutritious, delicious and medicinal and play a critical ecological role. (The largest organism on Earth is the Honey fungus!) Both indoor and outdoor cultivated and foraged mushrooms can serve a niche market at restaurants or in CSA's. Yet, some growers face red tape because mushrooms don't fit into the standard regulations for veg, fruit, meat, etc. 

What do you love about these elusive organisms? What are your favorite mushrooms to forage? If you cultivate mushrooms for sale, how do you manage fruiting and storage to prevent contamination?

Black & Indigenous farmers are responsible for countless contributions to farming as we know it. They do not receive nearly adequate credit for their contributions. Today, Latinx farmworkers are the invisibilized force behind US agriculture.  These same farmers were prevented from owning land, never given land promised to them and face tremendous challenges in securing land today.  Yet, Farmers of Color persevere.  Many are making strides to get back to the land, feed communities, and take control of land, soil, food and more.

How can you work for more equity for Farmers of Color?  As a Farmer of Color, what inspires you, what do you grow?  Uplift a story about a BIPOC farmer you know or submit one of your own.

Our team is taking our time with this issue, giving us time to connect, to write and develop the issue at a speed of trust and responsibility. We recognize NOFA is a predominantly white organization and the reasons for this. We want to be sure this issue is done with integrity and respect.
